Latest Safety Alerts
Hello folks and welcome to another week of lockdown. I hope everyone is coping OK and things are starting to ease up for you in some respects. In a safe way of course. John from Blacon hasn’t taken his eye of the ball at all during this lockdown period. For that we thank him immensely. He has just sent me the latest safety alerts from Cheshire Fire and Rescue that we all should heed. And, as I always say, spread the word where we can.
There a few messages to be aware of in this latest safety alerts update.
Have a read of them and take the messages on board everyone.
Latest Safety Alerts
“Welcome to the June edition of the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service e-Newsletter.
Firefighters warn smokers of the dangers of smoking indoors after three fatal fires.
We are warning residents about the dangers of smoking at home following a third fatal fire in Cheshire East involving cigarettes since February this year. The latest fire was on 31 May in the bedroom of a terraced house in Moorhouse Avenue in Alsager.
Members of the public rescued an 83-year-old man, and firefighters rescued a 75-year-old woman. The couple were taken to hospital but sadly died days later.
This latest incident followed a living room fire in Congleton in April where a 73-year-old man sadly died. And a fire in a bedroom in Nantwich in February in which an 80-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man sadly died.
A joint investigation between Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire Police indicates that, in all three cases, the fire was accidental and caused by a cigarette.

Latest Safety Alerts – Be Water Aware
Cooling off in rivers, canals, ponds, quarries and lakes can have deadly consequences. We’re urging people, particularly children and teenagers, not to swim anywhere other than in purpose-built and supervised swimming pools. Unless they are members of an organised swimming group.

Latest Safety Alerts – Countryside Fire Safety Advice
Grass fires can get out of hand very quickly. Also, they can cause extensive damage and put lives at risk. Furthermore, they can also last for several days once a fire takes hold using up valuable Fire Service resources which could be needed elsewhere.

Even more very important messages here in this latest safety alerts post. I hope you all take note and spread the word where you can. And, also very importantly, stay safe everyone.
Latest Safety Alerts – Furthermore
As well as the vital messages above, this is something that also needs a mention. It concerns the dangers of taking a dip in a particular stretch of water on the River Dee.
Have a read of this……
“People have been urged to stay away from a stretch of the River Dee in Chester following reports of swimmers becoming ill from ‘potentially polluted water’.
Public Health England said they were working with Cheshire West and Chester Council, Welsh Water and the North West Environment Agency to manage a ‘potential discharge of pollution’ into Caldy Brook. This came about after they received reports of people become ill after swimming in the Sandy Lane stretch of the Dee.
They wrote on Twitter on June 27:
“We have reports of people becoming ill after swimming in the Sandy Lane, Chester stretch of the River Dee. So we would advise people not to swim in this stretch of water at this time.
“If you have swum in this water and develop diarrhoea, fever or abdominal pain within 10 days of swimming contact your GP.”
The Environment Agency tweeted that the pollution may have come from a privately owned pumping station near Chester and said members of their team are on site providing advice and guidance.
In the meantime, people are urged to stay away from that stretch of the river whilst the issue is investigated.”
