Shops In Chester No Longer With Us-Part 2
Right then, I did say in my original “shops no longer with us” post that a Part 2 would follow. After a bit of debate behind the scenes so to speak, Part 2 is here. Today’s “shops in Chester no longer with us” post will focus on mens clothes shops. It has been this topic that has created a bit of a debate. All will be revealed….so, continue reading. You may be able to help!!!
Shops In Chester No Longer With Us
As I said this post focuses on mens clothes shops. Bear in mind the whole theme of these general Memory Lane posts are based on my own experiences. So I will only post about the shops, pubs and clubs etc that I remember. On that note there won’t be a specific post about ladies clothes shops. That is because I never went into any. Honest.
Having said that I will give one ladies clothes shop a mention. And that is Chelsea Girl. It was based in Foregate Street. And my sister worked there. That’s how I remember it.
Anyway, shops in Chester frequented by us menfolk.
Shops In Chester-Saturday Night Dancing Shirts And More
There are quite a few shops on the list. Some specifically remembered and one that has caused a bit of head scratching. Wait a minute, I’ve just thought of another unnamed, possible head scratcher shop.
Onto the easy to remember by virtually one and all I’ve mentioned this post to. How about Gear Box in Love Street? Everyone of a certain age remembers that don’t they?
Caran D’Ache in Frodsham Street. The always impeccably attired Dave Knox (aka Knocker) worked there for years. He later worked part-time in Nickleby’s in Bridge Street but was better known as the main man from Caran D’Ache. He was a good footballer as well was Knocker. A more than handy centre-forward for Vicars Cross Wanderers in Chester and District Sunday League I recall. Sadly no longer with us now though. A top bloke, well known and well loved by many.
Saturday Night Dancing Shirts – What About These
Harry Fenton in the centre of the Grosvenor Precinct. The aforementioned Nickleby’s in Bridge Street. When I was in my Saturday night dancing pomp I used to visit Nickleby’s regularly. As a result I got to know Tim and Gary who worked there very well.
In fact a well remembered occasion for me was a visit to Nickleby’s on a Saturday afternoon. Buy some clobber, home change for a Saturday night out, back into town and meet Tim in Barlows next door. A few sherbets with Tim and Mehmet (landlord of Barlows) always started the evening off well.
I’m still in touch with Tim as it happens. How you doing Tim? Good win last night in the end. A bit nervy but we got the points – that’s the main thing.
Anyway, I digress. Here’s a few more mens shops in Chester you may remember. Clobber by the entrance to The Forum, Stolen From Ivor in Northgate Street, Bradleys in Foregate Street, Dunns by the Eastgate Clock, The Sweater Shop (I think it was called that) in Eastgate Street, Jack Jones in the Market and here’s the one that has me and a fair few others stumped.
Grab yourself a cup of tea or coffee and get your thinking hat on. Hang on a mo, I’ll just make myself a coffee as well.
Shops In Chester – Does Anyone Remember This One?
Please someone say “Yes”. Pretty please. The shop concerned was where Poundland is now in Frodsham Street. It was a casual, mens, jeans, t-shirts and Saturday night dancing clobber type of shop.
I’m not sure how long it was there. It wasn’t actually in Mercia Square but on the corner where Poundland is now I recall. I remember being in the shop and looking out the window. From there I could see the gents toilets and the side of Witches Kitchen restaurant.
And it was called……..any ideas? Anyone? Please, it’s driving me nuts. If it didn’t exist then I’ve been whisked off into a parallel universe world at some time in the past.
Oh, by the way, a few suggestions have been the Army and Navy Store. It wasn’t that but thanks for the suggestion. A good shout was from someone in The Cottage (where else…..so many great brainstorming sessions happen there on a Sunday afternoon). The fella I was talking to suggested it was Stolen From Ivor either before or after it was located in Northgate Street. Hmmm…….worth checking that one out.
And as I said above, I have remembered another. It was on Bridge Street Row, virtually directly opposite Dutch Houses Fitness Centre. Back in the late 90’s I guess. What was that called?
A fair bit of food for thought there methinks. Anyone else remember these shops in Chester no longer with us?
Not unsurprisingly there are still so many other shops to recall in other niches. So, a Part 3 is imminent. What niche shall I tackle next? I’ll have a ponder.
Thanks to those scratching their heads on my Frodsham Street missing shop name dilemma. Someone, somewhere will come up with the name……won’t they……please!!!!
And thanks to you all for visiting my website.
