Fly Tipping
This article is something I’ve been wanting to cover for some time. Fly tipping. Why the interest? Because like so many others it effects us and where we live. Where we live in Hoole has been a particular nightmare in terms of people just dumping things at will it seems at times.
Fly Tipping – A Recent Big Clean Up
To their credit, the local Council carried out a big clean up a couple of weeks ago or so. Have a look at the photo below.
It is a photo I took of a leaflet we have been given. The two images on the leaflet are a good representation of a “before” and “after” scenario we have experienced before and after our particular clean up.
I did take a photo of a “before” situation from right outside our back gate but, for the life of me, I can’t find it on my hard drive. Anyway, not to worry, as a quick narrative will help paint the picture.
Fly Tipping – Raw Meat Piled Up Over A Grid
A few feet away from our back gate is a grid. On three occasions there has been what looked like raw chicken breast fillets just dumped on top of the grid. Health hazards? How many can you think of? Would it attract rats and mice? We all know the answer to that don’t we.
Not only a health hazard to we humans either. What about cats and dogs? Dumping raw meat really took fly tipping to a different level. We did in fact phone the Council on two occasions to report this issue and the mess generally. Although it was said they would come and have a look within two days that didn’t happen. Maybe it was because they had already decided to carry out the big overall clean up anyway.
I have taken an “after” photo though since the clean up. Have a look at this photo below.
How good does that look. It is clear all the way through from beginning to end. A job well done and the difference it has made has been immense. It is such a big improvement.
I popped out of our back gate last week to cycle down to the Countess. At last I could cycle all the way down to the end of the alley. Normally you can only go a few yards before you have to negotiate around a pile of rubbish, or even have to get off your bike and push it around the mess.
On the day of the big clean up I spoke to one of the team carrying out the work. He told me of some of the types of things they came across. Nineteen different types of radiators for instance apparently!!!
As the leaflet mentions, there were a fair number of mattresses etc, computer monitors and printers, empty beer bottles and so much more. Quite how these people feel it is OK to carry out such wide scale fly tipping is beyond me. Or to carry out fly tipping of any description for that matter.
Come on folks take note and play by the rules. Have a look at the “after” photo above. Isn’t that so much better. Don’t you think we ALL benefit from keeping the alleys clean and tidy? Don’t be so selfish and ruin it for everyone else.
Fly Tipping – Is It A Thing Of The Past?
So is this the end to our fly tipping problems? I hoped so but alas not the case. On Saturday somebody has yet again dumped a pile of rubbish at the entrance of the alley. A couple of filled and ripped black bin bags, cardboard boxes and other rubbish. I was going to take a photo today, but as it happens the rubbish wasn’t there this morning.
A pang of conscience by the fly tippers maybe? I very much doubt it. I would imagine someone from the Council has removed the debris. Hopefully they were able to identify the culprits and fine them accordingly.
Litter Enforcement Areas
Yes, offenders can now be fined as our area has been designated as a “Litter Enforcement Area“. You can probably see on the image of the leaflet above, offenders face a potential fine of £120. The leaflet actually says “residents who continue to put out their black bags in the wrong place or on the wrong day may be fined £120”
Will this be a deterrent to the fly tippers and put an end to the fly tipping problem? Hopefully so, although it didn’t stop whoever it was that selfishly dumped their rubbish over the weekend.
I would slightly change the message mentioned above taken from the leaflet myself. I would replace the word “may” with the word “will”.
Fly Tipping – Going Forward From Now On
I am sure I will be visiting this issue again here on my website. I will keep having a look at our alley and, where relevant, I will post any updates with photos if necessary.
What about other areas though? I know the fly tipping problem we have in our alleyway in Hoole is not an isolated problem to our location only. So, what about other areas? I’m sure there are plenty of them with the same problem.
Let’s all try to do our bit and keep on top of this problem. Where I can I will do my bit.

Let’s keep it tidy folks. We all have to live with any mess the few leave. It is not pleasant and it is not healthy. So, take note and think of all your neighbours before dumping your rubbish.
Thanks for reading.
