Women Drivers
Now I’m guessing that some readers who saw that headline thought……what the……!!! The cheeky so-and-so. Who would be so interested in such an innocuous heading? Why the ladies amongst us of course. Well now I have your attention, don’t panic. The article is not about women drivers. No siree!! It is about women cyclists. Well, to be more exact, it is about one particular woman cyclist.
Women Drivers? – No, Women Cyclists Actually
I must say I like a cycle ride every now and then. The trick is to stay on the safe paths and routes and, if you can, avoid women drivers. Only kidding!!!
But my enjoyment for cycling is nothing it would seem to the enthusiasm shown by one local lady cyclist.
Take a bow Sylvia Briercliffe. Sylvia just loves a good bike ride. So, what’s so spectacular about that you may ask? If I said that Sylvia is approaching 90 years young and is as enthusiastic about cycling as a youngster is when unwrapping their first Christmas present bicycle.
It is this enthusiasm that Sylvia is hoping to harness and spread the word so to speak. So, Sylvia is hoping to inspire women from the age of 50+ from the region to take up cycling.
Sylvia And The “Give It A Spin” Project
Sylvia volunteers to work at the Lime Wood Close in Newton every Monday, helping out with their “Give It A Spin” project. After a difficult period in her life, Sylvia had a light bulb moment a few years ago while cycling to buy some eggs from a local farm.
In a flash she thought that as she was still with good health and she had a bike, why not put those two assets to good use.
So, she challenged herself to try and raise money for charity by cycling 1,000 miles in 12 months. And you know what. She only went and did it!!! In all Sylvia raised £2,000 which was split between an Alzheimer’s charity and Live! Cheshire.
A big “well done” to you Sylvia. A great effort.
From Little Acorns
Now having got the cycling bug and not wishing to rest on her laurels, Sylvia embarked on a campaign to encourage more ladies to follow her lead and get themselves in the saddle.
Sylvia’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed either. Sylvia has been named as one of the “Cycling UK’s” – “100 Women In Cycling”. For this Sylvia picked up an award in a snazzy event in London in July. Congratulations Sylvia.

As Sylvia says, cycling ticks so many boxes. It is good cardio exercise, you manage to get some fresh air, easier on the joints than walking and it gives you a boost generally and a feel good moment. I can agree and relate to all those points Sylvia.
Has reading about Sylvia inspired you? If so and you would some more information about how to get involved…….

Women Drivers – Ignore My Headline
Well ladies now you can see that my headline of “Women Drivers” was just a ruse to get you to read this article about such a wonderful lady.
My thoughts on women drivers can be summed up accordingly. I honestly think that women drivers are……..hang on, excuse me….must dash someone’s at the door.
Speak soon folks.
