Latest Sports News
A quick round up of latest sports news to see how some of our local teams are faring. One of our local major players in the sporting arena have not yet started their league campaign as yet. But that is about to change today. Chester RUFC begin their league campaign today away at Sheffield.
Latest Sports News – Chester RUFC
Can Chester RUFC go one better than last term? having finished second in the National League Two North in 2018/19, they unfortunately missed out on promotion in the play-offs. A defeat against Canterbury in the play-offs resigned Chester RUFC to another season in League Two.
The message coming out of Hare Lane though is that there is no undue pressure on them to replicate last season’s performances. Like most teams in most sports, the squad has seen some comings and goings.
In the words of head coach, Jan Van Deventer, Chester “are looking strong”. Pre-season preparations have gone well, so you could well understand a sense of optimism. But as Van deventer pointed out, the division was a tight one with several clubs within touching distance of Chester. Chester themselves only finished four points behind champions, Hull, so all in all it was a very competitive league.
As mentioned, Chester RUFC begin their campaign today (7th September) away at Sheffield Tigers.

Latest Sports News – Chester FC
As last season could be best described as a season of consolidation to some extent as Chester’s new managers settled in, this season will hopefully see Chester push on and aim for the top places in the National League North.
So far so good after nine games. Chester have recorded 5 wins; 3 draws and only 1 defeat so far. And that defeat was a bit of an unfortunate affair it would seem.
Having spoken to a Chester fan before and after the defeat against Spennymoor, it would seem that the referee played an integral part in the proceedings. Much to Chester’s disadvantage. Maybe it’s best to leave it at that. As the Chester fan pointed out though, the referee’s performance wasn’t a big surprise.
Not that Chester used the referee’s performance as an excuse. No, as the season pans out, defeats and strange referring decisions are to be expected. It’s how the team react to setbacks is the important issue. And Chester reacted very well after last Saturday’s defeat by winning their following game away to Curzon by 3-1.
Currently Chester sit in 3rd place in the league. Still early days so they are not getting away. However though, it is not unreasonable for Chester fans to have some sense of optimism.
Chester are at home today to Guiseley, kick-off 3pm.
Last But Not Least – Chester Boughton Hall
Yes, last but not least in this latest sports news post, a huge congratulations to Chester Boughton Hall cricket team. They have just been crowned Cheshire County League champions. And they have won the league in style. Having defeated bottom club Grappenhall in emphatic style by 8 wickets, they clinched the title with two games to spare.
Well done to one and all involved at Chester Boughton Hall.
As I said, a quick latest sports news round up. We are lucky to have a variety of quality sports teams right on our doorstep. I feel they deserve a great deal of credit for their achievements. Hopefully, local fans will respond and get down to the respective venues and support them. I will periodically “spread the word” so to speak during the season to keep you abreast of how things are progressing.
