Chester Zoo Baby Red Pandas

There has been two new additions recently. These little stunning and precious nine-week-old twins, classed by conservationists as endangered in the wild, were born on 22 June to mother, Nima and dad, Koda.

Mum and Dad have had them safely tucked away in their nest boxes since they were born. Until last week that is. And don’t they look the real Bobby Dazzlers!!

Now they have ventured out into the big wide world, albeit briefly, specialist vets and keepers have had their very first look at the little beauties. An all over health check has seen the cuties examined, where they were weighed, sexed and vaccinated. One boy and one girl was the findings of their check up.

No sooner were they given a clean bill of health and Mum, Nima, took them straight back to their nest.

Welcome to the world to both of them and a special welcome to Chester Zoo also. No doubt visitors will be flocking to the Zoo to catch a sight of these latest additions to the Chester Zoo family as soon as they are allowed out of their nest.

More great news of course for Chester Zoo as well. It will come as no great surprise to learn that in recent years, Chester Zoo has been fighting for the future of the red panda. Also known as the ‘fire fox’, through habitat-focused conservation projects in the Sichuan Mountains of China, where they can be found among the bamboo forests.

Red pandas are also listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) red list of threatened species. Recent estimates suggest there are only 10,000 individuals left in the wild. So, yet again, a fantastic achievement by all concerned at Chester Zoo in bringing these baby red pandas into the world.
