Shropshire Arms 70’s Disco
Fair do’s there was quite a bit going on in Chester over the weekend. As I often say, we are blessed living in Chester with so many things to do on our doorstep. One event I managed to get to was the Shropshire Arms 70’s disco yesterday. First off, are these occasions still called ‘discos’. I suppose in keeping with the 70’s era, then the term ‘disco’ is still appropriate.
Shropshire Arms 70’s Disco
Whatever the correct term or label is, it doesn’t really matter in the greater scheme of things. The afternoon itself is top drawer. I mentioned in an earlier post – https://chesterlifestyle.com/whats-happening – how it was a nostalgic and extremely enjoyable trip down Memory Lane.
I bumped into ex-footballing colleagues and opponents from years gone by. Ex doorman from Joe’s Wine Bar when Joe’s was one of “the” places to frequent. There were ex-work colleagues as well. Hello again Lyn, great to see you again after all these years. Some great dancing……but where were the handbags in the middle of you and your friends!!!
Maybe even more impressive, an ex-Mayor of Chester was there!!!
NB: The photo above is an older photo I took of the Shropshire Arms a while ago. I meant to take a few yesterday but I got too caught up in the atmosphere. I’ll take a few on 4th August.
A Golden Eagle Blast From The Past
While walking up to the Shropshire, I sort of recognised a familiar-ish face from donkeys years ago from a distance. As I got closer, it was clear.
Yes, it was Dave from the Golden Eagle days from the 80’s. Incredible!!! After the initial back slapping and the customary “you haven’t changed” (yea right!!!) exchanges, we established that we hadn’t seen each other since about 1986!!!
Wow!!! That’s 33 years ago!! He has now moved to Crewe so there was little chance of bumping into him over the years. What was good to hear was that he heard about the event through my website.
We had a real good catch up.
Shropshire Arms 70’s Disco-Well Done Trotter
The occasion was excellently overseen by resident DJ, John – aka “Trotter”. The afternoon was scheduled to run from between 3pm to 7pm. But in fact, Trotter went beyond 7pm. Nearer to 7:30pm in fact.
Some great sounds were played. And some excellent memories relived. As one track started up I mentioned to a fella I was talking to at the bar that the particular song just started reminded me of days gone by at “The Kings”
That prompted a few minutes of reliving the “good old days” of going to Kings. One of the great memories of Kings (apart from hearing “Rock The Boat” by Hues Corporation) was the Sunday nights free bitter and cider before 9:30pm.
Yes indeed, well done John. You put on a great show and got the place rocking.
Guess The Average Age?
As the title of “Shropshire Arms 70’s Disco” suggests, there were quite a few (well virtually everyone really) in attendance of, let’s say, 50+. Alright……50++++++++
There were even quite a fair few free bus passes knocking about. I did suggest to Tom, the landlord, it may be a good idea to have a “Guess The Average Age” competition.
If everyone was prepared to be honest and (anonymously of course), drop their true age in years and months down on a slip of paper, it could be possible to work out the average age of those in attendance. You could do something like, a £1 to enter, winner (and their partner as well maybe) win a drink or two and the proceeds go to a local charity.
Could be worth a consideration.
Anyway, it is well worth remembering that the “Shropshire Arms 70’s Disco” is held on the first Sunday of every month. Make a note in your diary – Sunday 4th August. Get yourself down there and join in the fun.
A Request To Trotter If I May For The Next Shropshire Arms 70’s Disco
What about playing “Oops Upside Your Head” by the “Gap Band” – a 1979 classic. As a reminder of what this was all about, or if you haven’t heard of it before, have a look at this………
Maybe even a “best rowing boat” line competition? I remember taking part in these rowing boat “dances” so many times. That will sort out the still fit ‘oldies’ from those that have had the odd new, artificial joint fitted!!!
If Trotter was to play this – don’t wear your best trousers or dress or skirt if you fancy taking part!!!
I’m gonna be humming “Oops Upside Your Head” all day now!!!
A great afternoon had by all. Well done to Tom and his staff and a special thanks to John and his wife, Helen, for providing the entertainment.
See you all again for the next “Shropshire Arms 70’s Disco” on 4th August.
