The Chester Raft Race
Well that year went quickly didn’t it. It doesn’t seem anything like a whole year ago since the Chester Raft Race 2018. But a whole year it is. It’s a sign of getting old apparently some will say when the years just rattle by. Hey ho….no need to worry about things outside your control. So, the Chester Raft Race. What’s it all about?
The Chester Raft Race
To begin with, the Chester Raft Race is a lot of fun first and foremost. But, apart from a great laugh had by all on the River Dee, the occasion is a big charity fund raising event organised by Chester Rotary and Round Table.
This year is the 44th year of the event. It begins at 10am down at The Groves, River Dee, this Sunday morning coming (30th June). Before the real action begins at 10:30am, Jay St John will be treating the onlookers to an impressive display of skillful of flyboarding.
Then, as I mentioned above, the rafts will commence battle at 10:30am. The proceedings commence alongside the Meadows before heading down river, under the suspension bridge before concluding just above the weir.
More than 30 rafts have been entered this year. As in previous years I’m sure those taking part will be spectacularly attired in fancy dress. And be armed with a variety of devious, sneaky “weapons”. You know, the normal armoury of bags of flour, eggs and other sticky foodstuffs no doubt.
Awards – The Chester Raft Race
There will again be awards for various categories. For instance, there will be a fastest “Ladies” raft and a fastest “Hostelry” raft. The main award however will be awarded to the best raft that mirrors the theme of these year’s event – “Chester Heritage and Transport Through The Ages”.
As far as the funding beneficiaries goes, the funds generated will be in aid of Claire House Children’s Hospice and other local charities. All worthy causes each and every one of them.
What About The Weather?
Bingo!! Well, so far anyway. The weather forecast is warm and sunny. A bit of the heatwave that all of the rest of Europe apart from us seems to be enjoying maybe?
I know last year it was cracking the flags and there were thousands down there enjoying the events. No doubt there will be thousands down there again.
To give you an idea of what to expect, have a look at a video I produced last year…..
Yes indeed, this is an event well worth a visit. It is a great annual event that you should really get down to see if you can. Even better if the weather is good. But, even if it isn’t, don’t let that put you off.
So, that’s Sunday taken care of. The Chester Raft Race, a relaxing sit on a bench in The Groves for a while after, a walk through the park and a couple of snifters in town. Sorted!!!
