Latest Chester News
There’s a few articles that I was going to write separate, individual posts about, but I’m a bit strapped for time today. Sorry about that. One of the reasons being I’m looking to get into town for the Christmas lights switch on. So, I’m writing a potted latest Chester news post. Not all latest Chester news – just a few snippets.
And the first latest Chester news item is…..the Chester Christmas lights switch on is later today. For more details – see my post from last week HERE.
Latest Chester News
What else was I going to write about?…..oh yeah….more car parking grief for visitors to Chester. Why’s that? Well, free parking after 2pm at the Linenhall Car Park has been axed.
The Chester Race Company have followed Cheshire West and Chester Council’s steps of abolishing free after 3pm parking. More bad news for visitors to Chester and city centre businesses and services. Great news for Cheshire Oaks and Broughton Retail Park though. The change in parking arrangements takes place from Monday, 19th November.
MBNA Job Losses
As one of Chester’s biggest employers, this is a big blow indeed. According to reports there will be “significant” job losses. How “significant” is “significant” at this stage is unknown.
Shop Closure
The closure of retail outlets in the city centre has sadly been a regular occurrence over recent months/years. Another well established unfortunately has bitten the dust. Berketex Bride store in Foregate Street has ceased trading with immediate effect. How this leaves forthcoming brides to be is not clear. What a nightmare as you’re planning for the biggest day of your life.
Anyone who is waiting for the delivery of purchased items should call – 0114 349 1388. I hope you all get sorted out ladies and your big day is not affected.
Shop Openings
On a brighter note there is a store that has opened in the city centre. Yay…..!!! Europe’s largest shoe retailer, Deichmann, has opened its doors to customers in Foregate Street. The official opening was last Saturday, 10th November. To mark the event there were a variety of in store promotions to be had.
Onwards and upwards and all that. Let’s hope the store stays in our city centre for many years to come.
More Good News
It was a sad day indeed to write about the closure of legendary Chester jewellers, Lowe and Sons back in June. See original post HERE. Well, it is great to report that Lowe and Sons are in fact re-opening!!! Great stuff!!! Hats off to neighbouring jewellers, Powell’s Fine Jewellery who went more than the extra mile it would seem in managing to bring the well established store back into business.
Not only back trading but also back in their familiar, stunning Victorian premises on Bridge Street Row. And back trading with several members of the well known staff – including manager, Kevin Parry.
Welcome back folks – it’s great to have you back.
Chester Market
I know I’ve mentioned the upturn in Chester Market’s fortunes before, but in more latest Chester news, the market is not only going to stay open late (8pm) on Fridays, but also open until 8pm on these Thursdays in the run up to Christmas – 29th November, 6th December and 13th December. Furthermore, the market will be open on these Sundays from 11am to 4pm – 2nd December; 9th December and 16th December.
Great stuff Chester Market. I do like Chester Market I must admit.
Last But Definitely Not Least
Fittingly, more than 1,000 fallen Cestrians who died in the First World War were remembered in a special tribute held at Chester Castle. All the names of our fallen heroes were projected onto the walls of the castle on the nights of 9th, 10th and 11th November. This was particularly poignant as the castle currently stands very much the same as it did during World War One.
Always Remembered – Never Forgotten
