Scam Alert – Fake British Gas Emails 03/08/2018
A regular visitor to my website, John from Blacon, has sent me this scam alert message bulletin. There are quite a few scam emails, texts and phone calls knocking about at present. We should all be on our guard. And, wherever possible, spread the word. These scams clearly must work as the scammers keep persevering with sending out these messages trying to trick us.
Some people see right through them. Others unfortunately do get taken in. I must admit I tend to ignore any such messages. If for instance I receive an email purporting to be from my bank addressed something like “Dear Valued Customer” or “Dear Customer” I ignore them. A bank, or any other trustworthy organisation would not address a customer in that way.
The messages though are quite convincing. It can be difficult to recognise a scam message. As a general rule, it would seem to be a wise policy to ignore (and also report) any messages that are asking for any personal details to be provided.
Anyway, have a read of the article John has kindly provided below. Also, if you can, make others aware of it as best you can. Make a note of the cyberaware link below as well and have a good look at that website.
Scam Alert
“Watch out for these fake British Gas refund emails. We’ve had an increase in reports about fake British Gas emails claiming to offer refunds.
The links provided in the emails lead to genuine-looking British Gas phishing websites that are designed to steal the usernames and passwords for British Gas accounts.
Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information in case it’s a scam. Never automatically click on a link in an unexpected email or text. For more information on how to stay secure online, visit www.cyberaware.gov.uk Message Sent By Action Fraud (Action Fraud, Administrator, National)”
It really is a shame that these scammers actually exist. Instead of scam emails, wouldn’t it be nice if the only unsolicited emails you received were from people like Colonel Gaddafi’s grandson. Such a nice chap. He doesn’t even know me and he is wanting to deposit $5.5m into my bank account. Incredible!!
Won The Lottery?
Seriously though, totally ignore the Colonel Gaddafi grandson emails. And those from Nigerian Prince’s. And, do you really think you could have won the lottery without even buying a ticket!! Really, my email address came up randomly as the “lucky winner” of a lottery jackpot. Get real folks and stay vigilant.
Thanks again to John for the scam alert update. Much appreciated. No doubt I’ll be posting more of John’s scam alert type articles in due course. Watch this space.
