Periodically we will be letting you know of some up and coming events that you may feel are worth attending. Again in keeping with the local flavour of things we will be predominantly concentrating on in and around the Chester area. One good looking event coming up next month is the appearance of The John Fairhurst Band at Telfords Warehouse. Plenty of time to get ready for the event as it isn’t on until the 18th November.

Telfords Warehouse

As the photograph demonstrates, Telfords Warehouse is in a superb location, smack bang on the canal basin. A spacious venue with a great selection of beers. Being a cask ale lover myself, a choice of CAMRA rated cask ales to choose from ticks the right box for me.

If you fancy a bite to eat you can pop upstairs to the popular restaurant. Here you can enjoy an excellent menu and weekly special offers.

John Fairhurst Band

A Blues guitarist from Wigan has been hailed as “the Wigan Jimi Hendrix”

That’s not a bad accolade to have bestowed on you is it? Luckily enough the folks of Chester can find out for the themselves if the label is a fitting tribute or not. As it happens, The John Fairhurst Band are appearing at Telfords Warehouse on a memorable day in the year. Why is the 18th November a memorable date? Well, in addition to this great gig happening, the day also marks the birthday of a certain Chester Lifestyle website owner. All cask ale contributions gratefully received!!

On the night, Fairhurst will be showcasing a large amount of new material as well as some old favourites. His music has a distinctive feel of The East, with influences from India as well as from his own travels through Asia.

Accompanying him will be the Spanish rock band, Los Labios. They themselves have recently enjoyed a successful spell working with Lenny Kravitz.

Oh, by the way, how many of you said, “who’s Jimi Hendrix?”

Jimi Hendrix

For those not old enough to have heard of Jimi Hendrix, here is a quick bio. Jimi Hendrix, or James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix) to give him his full name, was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He seemed to be around a lot longer than he was.

Even though his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in Popular Music history. In addition, he is also recognised as one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Very significantly, he was described as “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music” by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Sadly though he wasn’t with us very long. He was cruelly taken from us on September 18, 1970 at the tender age of only 27.

It’s always worth having a quick look at Jimi Hendrix in action. Here he is performing one of his classics, Purple Haze…..

As a side note, anyone remember the local legend, Billy May, playing his way round local pubs in the 80’s and 90’s? If you do, you will well remember his party piece of playing Purple Haze and his guitar solo around his back!!

In due course I will produce a blog post on Billy May. A top man and a top performer.

So, don’t forget. The John Fairhurst Band play Telfords Warehouse on 18th November (ahem….ahem…also remember, all real ale contributions gratefully accepted!!). Access is free on the night before 9pm, or £4 after 9pm. If you are a Telfords member, or a holder of a valid NUS card, then access is free all night.
